chain of cool fools

Maybe you know Paul Simon’s song “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard.” I mentioned it in yesterday’s Blog post. The schoolyard’s become a favorite place in these latter years of my life – as metaphor primarily, on occasion as solid ground with swings and seesaws when I get there – and I’m always dragging someone different along with me. I mean, I know a Diego, but not a Julio.

Yesterday it was Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of non-dual wisdom, accompanying me round and around on the schoolyard merry-go-round. Much earlier today, in my Morning Pages, there I was hanging with Jacob Marley. Me and Jacob Marley down by the schoolyard, where we could both be heard rattling our chains. Maybe tomorrow I’ll be with Aretha – “Chain, Chain, Chain.”

The point is, I totally dig the schoolyard – it’s free, there ain’t no classes or instructors, no one telling me what to do. There’s times I can’t even see its edges. Boundless schoolyard.

Sometimes life’s pretty darn grand.
