nothing but flowers
I have an interview for a job, scheduled for 10am this morning. The interview will take place via video conference. It is suggested I dress ‘business casual.’
The sixth Koan in the “Gateless Gate” collection of Zen Koans is, “Buddha holds up a flower.” The Buddha is scheduled to preach to his followers, and when the time arrives there are 5000 in attendance. Buddha comes in and remains silent, simply holding up a flower. Only one of the 5000 smiles, and it is to this one the Buddha passes on his position.
We have lovely yellow alstromeria flowers in a vase in the living room, and it came to me earlier that I can bring one in and no matter what question I am asked by the interviewer, just hold up the flower. If the interviewer and her agency are filled with heart and with soul, the job will be mine. No contest. If that’s not the case, I’m on the lookout for men in white suits and butterfly nets. Either way the day’s sunnier and warmer.
Check this out. Interviewer — “Tell me about your experience that makes you a good candidate to work with children and young adults on the autism spectrum.” Me — “Little Harbor was always lovely in the summer.”
