“Twenty years of schooling and they put you on the day shift.” – Bob Dylan, ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’

Let’s see, there’s 12 years back there in the Wareham public schools. There’s another seven between Cape Cod Community and Salem State, scoring that piece of ‘Bachelor’s’ paper. Then there’s like three months of ‘Fiction Writing’ at Portland State University. Not even counting the kindergarten in the K through 12 thing. So, um, where’s the calculator, uh, 12 and 7 and a quarter and St. Patrick’s K……..

Twenty years of schoolin’ and my weary butt can’t even make it to the overnight shift. I guess the times have changed, maybe you’d say, cause I don’t believe I have. Well? Suit up and show up, right? Borrowing from Mr. Dylan again, it’s like every interviewer of your devoted blogger summarizes our zoom time together with this – “Most likely you’ll go your way and I’ll go mine.”

Zap!

I’ve just published my new book, my 12th book. I’m telling you this for two reasons. One, if I go and sell something like 10,000 copies…….day shift, night shift, no shift at all, it’ll make no difference. And two, here’s a friendly reminder to myself – It’s the joy in the journey, kid.

Then there’s this. What the interviewers don’t seem to get — This is just me, forever young.
